Research: Publishing and Institution

For magazines to be sold to the general public they need to be published by one of the large publishing institutions, usually located in the UK. In this post I will look at and research the different publishing houses and see which institution is more likely to publish my magazine.


EMAP Publishing: This institution publishes magazines that feature articles and studies on world news and important careers, for example - Nursing Times. In the long list of magazines that they publish, not one is a music magazine, therefore I can only conclude that the likely hood of this institution publishing my magazine is extremely unlikely.



IPC Publishing: This institution has recently undergone a change in name to "IPC Media", none the less, this large company remains a publisher. This institution publishes comic books and consumer magazines, consumer magazines such as, "Connect" for mass market women and "Inspire" aimed at all men. Despite the fact that IPC focuses on lifestyle magazines, this institution publishes NME, a music magazine.



Baurer Media Group: This is another large publishing company, that dates back to one of the oldest, being founded in 1875. This institution publishes the magazines Q and Kerrang. As these two music magazines are highly successful, I expect that Bauer would publish my own magazine.

I have looked at the characteristics of Q Magazine (in previous posts, you can find me analysing the front cover, contents page and double page spreads from the magazine) in order to aid my research I will buy a copy of Q Magazine and look into how I can make my own personal magazine effective to targeting my audience, like Q Magazine does, and how it attracts attention through design.
